What is the difference between Architectural shingles and 3-tab shingles?

3-tab shingles were the standard 30-40 years ago before laminated shingles were designed.  3-tab shingles are a single layer product made with a glass scrim and an asphalt emulsion applied on both sides.  They are designed with 3 sections or tabs which gives the roof a very linear look.  Architectural shingles are sometimes called laminated or dimensional, they are designed with a base layer similar to a 3-tab shingle and then laminated with an additional layer to give the appearance of wood shake.  They are much thicker and will last much longer than 3-tab shingles.  Because the appearance is considered much more appealing and the price is only slightly higher, laminate type shingles are now the standard for shingle roofs.

How long will a shingle roof last?

Again many factors affect the life of a given roof system, but generally speaking, a 3-tab shingle will have a life of between 18 and 22 years and a laminate shingles will have a life of between 25 to 30 years.

What kind of warranties are offered with shingled roofs?

3-tab shingles are offered in two types, one has a 15 year materials warranty and the other is a 20 year materials warranty.  Architectural shingles typically offer a limited lifetime material warranty.  This warranty is prorated so for the first 10 years they are 100% covered and then coverage decreases over time.  Virtually all manufacturer’s warranty the products against manufacturer’s defect only and cover the material only.  We provide labor warranties with all of our work.

How long does it take to install a new shingled roof?

Of course all roofs are not the same size and complexity but a typical roof of 3000 s.f. would require approximately 3-4 days to complete.

What if rain is in the forecast, will you still work on my roof?

We are very sensitive to the weather forecasts.  If rain is in the forecast, no matter how small the chance, we will not remove the old roof.  We are responsible for water damage to your home if we were to remove your existing roof and it rained, so we are very careful.  When we do remove your existing roof we ensure that it is removed and dried in on the same day.  That means we have the waterproofing membrane or underlayment installed so if it does rain unexpectedly overnight, your home will stay dry.
